There is no future for the Lobbying Disclosure Bill if the likes of Labour MP Charles Chauvel are seriously proposing that ideologically-driven groups and individuals, such as trade unions and NGOs, be exempt. Whereas others who are also ideologically-driven, such as business, are subject to the provisions of the legislation.

Lobbying for the interests of trade unions, it appears Chauvel argues that trade unions are in a similar position to philanthropic, voluntary organisations which are not-for-profit. Really?

Lobbying disclosure legislation has significant merit, if only to remove another bogie used by the politicians to indulge their supporters. But for one group effectively to say that "the groups and individuals I identify with are ‘less sinister’ than those whom my political adversaries identify with” is rubbish. You just need to look across the Tasman for the "less sinister” conduct of trade unions!

I’m not going to judge the conduct of our trade unions, NGOs, charities, not-for-profit groups or business interests, but if lobbying legislation is going to meet even our notional expectations, it’s all in, or no one in. What do you think?
